The record for the world's biggest pumpkin has been broken twice in just days as the new crown went to a giant squash as heavy as a small car.
Pumpkin grower Ron Wallace weighed his mammoth squash at a contest on Saturday. Officials from the Guinness Book of World Records today confirmed he smashed the record with his 1,431.5kg (3,156 lbs) pumpkin. This came just a week after the record was broken by two UK-based twin brothers, who became the first Brits to hold the title in its recorded history.
Brothers Ian and Stuart Paton, who are from Lymington, Hampshire, broke the record on October 3 with their 1,296kg (2,857 lbs) squash.
But seven days later, Wallace, 60, revealed his own pumpkin, which weighed nearly 200kg more than record holder. The huge gourd was inspected by officials from the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth at the Southern New England Giant Pumpkin Weigh Off, in Rhode Island, US.
This pumpkin is so large it weighs the same as a small car or three concert grand pianos. It could even make more than 3,000 pumpkin pies.
Mr Wallace, who has been growing giant gourds for 35 years, pocketed £2,650 ($3,500) at his local contest but said other competitions had enticed him with more prize money, some totalling around £53,000 ($70,000). The grower however said he wanted to be surrounded by his hometown for the record-setting win.
Describing the moment the pumpkin was weighed, the man, from from Rhode Island, said: "I was just ecstatic, the place just exploded." He added that he owed a lot to the tips and tricks he got from the pumpkin-growing community, adding: "The only way you create a 3,000-pound pumpkin is a community working together."
The head judge at the event, Matthew DeBacco, said: "It is astonishing to see what nature can produce under the helping hands of an expert horticulturist."
The 60-year-old however is no stranger to this as this is the third time he had held he heavyweight pumpkin title over his horticultural career, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.
Wallace won his first world record back in 2006 with a 681.3kg (1,502 lbs) squash and then again in 2012 with a 911.27kg (2,009 lbs) pumpkin.
The winner however said he plans to take some time off, saying: "I'm contemplating taking next year off to finish some projects around my farm. It will be a busy off season with seminars and requests and that takes a lot of time away from getting ready for the next season. We will see."
