LATAM Airlines flight bursts into flames as passengers urgently evacuated A fire broke out in one of the engines of a LATAM Airlines plane as it was lining up on the runway at Jorge Chávez International Airport in Lima, Peru The engine of an Airbus jet burst into flames just moments before take-off. LATAM Airlines flight LA2302, bound for Piura in north-west Peru, experienced an "unforeseen technical event" on the runway at Jorge Chávez International Airport in the capital Lima on Monday, the airline said. The fire broke out in one of the Airbus A320's left engines as the aircraft lined up on the runway. Emergency protocols were activated and passengers were evacuated as a precaution after the captain reported a problem with the left landing gear. LATAM Airlines Peru confirmed to local media that all passengers disembarked safely, with no injuries reported. A formal investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the fire. The airline has not identified the component that failed and has so far avoided referring to the incident as a fire in its official statements. Passengers were booked onto replacement flights, while the original plane, identified by aviation outlets as bearing the registration CC-BFS, remained on the ground for technical inspection. LATAM Airlines is a Chilean airline headquartered in Santiago, Chile. The Mirror has contacted the airline for comment. It comes after a private jet issued a "mayday" distress call shortly after taking off from Nigeria's capital after its cabin door came open and detached mid-flight. The Bombardier Challenger CL60 business jet departed Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja at 4.17pm UTC last Thursday, bound for Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos. The crew of flight DWC052 declared an emergency just three minutes after take-off, according to an incident report. The report, obtained by Nigerian newspaper the Daily Trust, said the crew informed air traffic control that a door had opened during the flight. The aircraft was instructed to return to Abuja for an emergency landing, where a duty controller observed that the door was missing. There were no reports of injuries.
