Log in Senior doctors in England plan to go on strike for two days in November, the British Medical Association (BMA) has announced. The consultants committee has announced strikes for 25 and 26 November for consultants in England. The government had recommended a 2.4% pay rise for doctors for the 2027/28 financial year as the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) and NHS England told the independent doctors’ pay review body it could plan the uplift “without having to make trade-offs against headline government health commitments”. Yet BMA argues that the pay increase falls short due to rising inflation and increasing demands on the NHS. A BMA spokesperson said: “It is simply not good enough that our repeated calls to enter formal negotiations with a mandate demanding a credible offer have not been acted upon. “Following an emergency meeting last week, the consultants committee voted reluctantly but decisively in favour of strike action. “We firmly believe this is now the only way to make the government take consultants and the issues that threaten our profession seriously. “The rapid, focused meetings we had with government from September onwards have so far failed to progress our demands in any meaningful way. “We’d asked for progress by 16 October. We have finally been offered a meeting, on 5 November, well after the budget and even then, it would only be a meeting to decide whether they are willing to formally negotiate with us on our demands.” More follows on this breaking news story.
