Emergency services were called to a row of shops on Berkley Street in the Toxteth area of Liverpool, shortly before 7pm on Thursday, to reports of an altercation. Officers arrived to find a punching bag machine had been pushed over and landed on a man, aged in his 50s, who had suffered a serious head injury. The victim was rushed to hospital, where he remains in a serious condition. A white tent remains in place at the scene on the pedestrianised area off Upper Parliament Street. The focus of the police cordon appears to be outside Bon Café where the shutter remains half closed. Two sheets of tarpaulin are also visible on the ground near the tent following the incident. An investigation is underway, with witness and CCTV enquiries taking place in the area. Detective Inspector Lee Egerton says that police are urging for anyone who was in the Berkley Street area around 7pm on Thursday night to get in touch with the police as well as people who may have information to help in the investigation.
