Grants to pay off debts available for millions of Brits The warning comes as many households continue to battle high living costs and rising arrears Millions of households struggling with mounting household bills are being urged to check whether they qualify for grants to wipe out debts and access extra financial support. Energy regulator Ofgem issued an official alert to consumers who have fallen behind on payments, highlighting free debt advice, emergency support schemes and grants that could help clear arrears. In a social media post, Ofgem said: “Have you fallen behind on paying your energy bills?” before directing consumers to sources of debt advice, extra support and “grants available to pay off debts”. The warning comes as many households continue to battle high living costs and rising arrears. Advice charity Citizens Advice says people struggling financially may qualify for a wide range of help, including debt-relief grants, fuel vouchers, discounted bills and winter support payments. Among the schemes highlighted are hardship funds offered by major suppliers, including British Gas, EDF Energy, E.ON Next, Octopus Energy, OVO Energy and Scottish Power. Citizens Advice said: “If you’re in debt to your energy supplier, you might be able to get a grant to help pay it off.” The charity also warned that people should not ignore mounting debts and urged households to seek support early. Under the schemes, struggling customers may be able to apply for one-off grants to reduce or clear arrears. In some cases, people may also qualify even if they are not customers of the supplier providing the support. The British Gas Energy Trust, for example, offers grants available to all households regardless of which supplier they use. Households on low incomes or benefits could also qualify for additional help including: - £150 off electricity bills through the Warm Home Discount scheme - Winter Fuel Payments worth between £100 and £300 - Cold Weather Payments during freezing conditions - Emergency fuel vouchers for prepayment meter customers - Local council hardship grants and support schemes Citizens Advice also warned consumers to stay alert to scams, including fake messages claiming to offer “heating allowances” or Winter Fuel Payments in an attempt to steal personal information. People who are elderly, disabled, vulnerable or living with long-term health conditions are also being encouraged to join the Priority Services Register, which can provide additional support from suppliers, including priority assistance and welfare checks.
