A vet has issued a health warning for the owners of several large dog breeds. In the alert, the vet named several popular breeds, including Labradors, Golden Retrievers, and German Shepherds.
Amir Anwary is a veterinary surgeon and social media content creator who goes by @Amirthevet online. In a new TikTok video, Amir shared a warning for pet owners, recounting a tragic story about a dog he'd recently had to put to sleep. The caption said: "I've been a vet for seven years and this advice you need to hear."
In the video, Amir said: "If you own a Labrador, a Golden Retriever, a Boerboel, a Bullmastiff, a Rottweiler, or a German Shepherd, or really any large breed dog, this video is for you. Hi guys. My name is Dr Amir, and I'm a veterinarian.
"The reason I've singled you guys out is because your dog breeds are at a risk of developing arthritis as they get older. Why is this? It's because they are significantly heavier than other dogs, and they put a lot more pressure on their joints."
He explained: "Now the reason this is something that is so near to me is because I euthanised a Labrador this week, and it was so sad because this dog was healthy otherwise. Its eyes were perfectly fine, its brain function was fine, its heart was as strong as ever, but its joints were not okay. It could not stand, and for that reason, it had to be euthanised.
"I see this so, so, so often with large breed dogs that the reason they have to be put down is because their joints are simply not functional any more. And the same mistake that most dog owners are making is they're not protecting their dog's joints while their dogs are still young. So this is how your dog's joints work. Their joints are always in motion.
"They're constantly building up and constantly breaking down. Now, when they're still young puppies, these two things are happening at the same pace. So your dog's joint is completely healthy. But as they get older, the speed at which the joint breaks down increases and the speed at which the joint builds up decreases. And this difference is what will eventually lead to arthritis.
"So what do you do to protect your dog's joints while they're still young? It's very simple. All you have to do is decrease the speed at which the joint breaks down and increase the speed at which the joint builds up."
Sharing advice, Amir said: "Use a combination of two different supplements. The first is a high-quality Omega-3 supplement. It acts as a natural anti-inflammatory. So it decreases the inflammation that breaks down your dog's joints. And the second is a comprehensive joint supplement containing glucosamine, chondroitin and collagen.
"So these ingredients are the building blocks of joint cartilage, and they promote the build-up of the joint. So when you supplement with both of these things, you're promoting the build-up and decreasing the breakdown. And this is what puts your dog's joints in balance."
