One of Brooke Hanlon's closest friends is shedding new light on the slain New Jersey mother's young adult life in Boston as the investigation into her unsolved murder stretches into its second month.
Hanlon, a 35-year-old therapist, was found fatally stabbed inside her Chester, New Jersey home on June 6. Nearly eight weeks later, authorities have yet to name a suspect or person of interest in the homicide case.
"Honestly, it’s been confusing, heartbreaking, and incredibly frustrating," said Jennifer Payne, Hanlon's graduate school friend and former roommate, who shared photos of the pair during their time in Boston and the years following.

"Nothing prepares you for unexpectedly losing a loved one, let alone to murder. But this case has been so unusual even for a murder," Payne told Fox News Digital. "I’ve basically been in a constant state of ‘functional freeze’—going through the motions of life but still stuck trying to process and accept that Brooke is gone."

"I’m already someone who struggles with 'not knowing' and wanting all the information as much as possible," Payne added. "So the near total silence leaves your mind racing to fill in the blanks."

Meanwhile, Brooke's husband, James "Conor" Hanlon—who goes by Conor—has made no public statements regarding the killing of his wife and mother to their 12-month-old baby girl.

Chester Township Mayor Tim Drag issues a statement extending condolences to the victim's family, adding: "To protect the integrity of that investigation, I will not comment on specific facts or circumstances at this time. We are committed to supporting law enforcement’s efforts and ensuring the safety of our residents."
As the investigation enters its third month, Payne emphasized that her primary concern remains honoring who Brooke was as a person—and ensuring her young daughter knows how loved her mother was.
"I can’t even begin to imagine what her family is going through. What I’m feeling is only a fraction of their pain. More than anything, I hope they know how deeply Brooke was loved and how wonderful of a family they were to her," Payne told Fox News Digital.
"I want them, especially Brooke’s daughter, to remember her beautiful and full life, that I was so grateful to be part of, and not just the ending to it. But the longer this drags out, the more focus is put on her death when Brooke was so much more than that to so many people."
