The Irish boxing legend defeated Flora Pili by unanimous decision to become a three-time undisputed champion before bringing the curtain down on her career
An athlete's career demands extraordinary levels of fitness, discipline and consistency, and Katie Taylor's is no different. Nutrition has played a huge part in the Irish-born fighter's punishing training schedule, especially in the lead-up to her career-ending bout on Saturday, September 5, with one particular meal boasting tremendous health benefits.
Taylor previously revealed what she had for breakfast during her training camp, and it's far more simpler than you could ever imagine. According to Sky Sports, the 40-year-old enjoys a bowl of porridge, topped with berries and other fruit, along with a drizzle of Manuka honey to give it that boost of sweetness.
This is a sensible choice for a sportsperson, because oats are a source of wholegrains, fibre and slow-release carbohydrates, while fruit provides vitamins and other nutrients. Porridge can also be a filling option that provides energy without requiring a complicated preparation routine, making it well suited to a busy schedule.
There is another reason oats have attracted attention when it comes to heart health, thanks to a type of soluble fibre called beta-glucan. The British Heart Foundation says consuming around 3g of oat beta-glucan a day, as part of a healthy diet, can help lower cholesterol levels, although that does not mean every bowl of porridge automatically qualifies as a heart-health treatment.
Taylor's breakfast was part of a wider approach to fuelling her body for elite competition rather than a standalone secret behind her success. She has previously described her diet as balanced, with meals including foods such as chicken, pasta, salmon and green vegetables alongside snacks such as yoghurt and fruit.
That disciplined approach accompanied Taylor through one of the most successful careers in boxing history, from her Olympic gold medal at London 2012 to becoming a multiple-time undisputed world champion. She turned professional in 2016 and went on to build a 26-1 record, suffering her only professional defeat against Chantelle Cameron before avenging it in their rematch.
Her final chapter came at Dublin's Croke Park on September 5, where she faced previously unbeaten French fighter Flora Pili in front of a crowd of 83,000. Taylor controlled the 10-round contest and secured a unanimous decision, with two judges scoring it 100-90 and the third 98-91.
The victory allowed Taylor to walk away from boxing as undisputed world super-lightweight champion and complete a remarkable farewell. After the fight, she placed her gloves in the centre of the ring as an emotional symbol of the end of her professional career.
