Shoppers don't have to wait long, as the new item will be landing in stores this weekend
A new raincoat coming to all UK Lidl stores this weekend not only costs less than £20, but could also be easily mistaken at a glance for a similar version on sale for much more at Next. Every Thursday and Sunday, Lidl introduces new Special Buy deals to its popular Middle Aisle, and this weekend's update includes a range of 'Winter Clothing' options.
From Sunday, November 1, shoppers will be able to buy Lidl's new Esmara Beige Ladies' Raincoat. For Lidl Plus members, the coat will cost £14.99, but for regular shoppers, it'll be £17.99.
The coat comes with a hood and side pockets. Shoppers can choose from small, medium or large. Besides beige, customers can choose either navy or a leopard-print design.
The 100% polyester coat features a full two-way zip, with storm guard and press studs. Lidl adds: "Water-repellent outer fabric thanks to Bionic-Finish Eco technology. Waterproof and windproof with sealed main seams."
How does the coat look similar to Next's £180 version?
Lidl's Ladies' Raincoat may be a budget-friendly alternative for anyone who likes the look of Next's £180 Helly Hansen Natural Moss Insulated PU Coat, but would rather keep spending to a minimum. Both coats look very similar at first glance.
They share the same classic, minimalist "fisherman's raincoat" style. Both are mid-thigh-length, have protective hoods, and have front flaps that hide the zippers and snap closed. They also have side pockets, giving them a very streamlined, casual look.
However, the major differences are in how they feel and perform. The Lidl coat is a lightweight, uninsulated polyester shell designed mainly to keep the rain off on warmer days.
The Helly Hansen coat is made from a much heavier, rubbery polyurethane fabric and includes built-in insulation. This means the Helly Hansen version will feel noticeably thicker, heavier, and warmer in cold weather.
Can the coat also be a budget-friendly alternative for John Lewis?
The navy version of Lidl's raincoat also shares similar features to John Lewis' £90 Didriksons Elly Windproof and Waterproof Shell Parka. The product description reads: "Elly is an everyday jacket in Galon that combines style and function.
"It is completely windproof and waterproof with welded seams for a 100% waterproof construction, making it suitable for both everyday use and outdoor activities. The jacket has a straight fit and a fixed hood that can be adjusted with riptape to provide extra protection against the weather and wind."
The decision ultimately comes down to what shoppers prefer; if you prefer the look of the Helly Hansen or Didriksons Elly coat but want to save money, the Lidl version could be an option. You get a very similar appearance for a fraction of the price, though it will feel different to wear.
