Need to know ITV expert says £1.66 Lidl item key to deciding when to turn your heating on All you need to know as home bills soar as temperatures plunge Need to know: Lidl's £1.66 buy that can help you decide when to switch the heating on - HOUSEHOLDS can use cheap thermometers to check when it is too cold to leave the heating off, an ITV consumer expert has advised. - Grace Forrell told This Morning viewers that room thermometers can be bought for around £10, with Lidl selling a three-pack for about £4.99. - She said: "You can pick up decent room thermometers for around £10. You can get them on the high street or online and they can help you track the temperature inside so you know when to switch it on.” - She said rooms should not be colder than 18C during the day, adding: "If you're elderly or you have certain medical conditions, you want that to be a few degrees warmer as the minimum as well." - Ms Forrell also urged people to get gas boilers serviced before winter, warning that waiting until one breaks down during cold weather could mean higher call-out costs. A service costs around £100 and should be carried out by an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. - She had three rules about things people need to check: - 1/ Check your carbon monoxide detectors. Test the alarm and see if there’s an expiry date. We tend to use fuel-burning appliances more in the winter which increases the CO risk. - 2/ Bleed your radiators and give the insides a good clean. Air pockets and dust build up can both affect efficiency. - 3/ Service your boiler. If something goes wrong in the middle of winter you may pay a higher call out fee due to demand and you’ll be without warmth at the worst time. - Landlords are responsible for gas safety checks and maintaining boilers in rented homes.
